UPI (Unified Payments Interface) has become an essential part of our daily life, making online payments easy and convenient. From paying bills to buying groceries, most Indians rely on UPI apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm. However, starting 1st August 2025, some new UPI rules will come into effect, and these changes will impact how you use UPI every day.
According to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the new rules aim to make the UPI system faster, safer, and more reliable. Here’s everything you need to know:
What Are the New UPI Rules?
✅ 1. Daily Limit on Balance Checks
UPI users can now check their account balance only 50 times per day on any UPI app. This rule is introduced to reduce traffic on UPI servers and prevent system slowdowns.
✅ 2. Payment Status Check Limited
If a payment gets stuck, you can check its status only three times. Repeated status checks will not work beyond this limit.
✅ 3. Auto-Debit Transactions During Non-Peak Hours
Subscription-based auto-debit payments like Netflix subscriptions or SIP investments will only be processed during non-peak hours, i.e.,
- Before 10:00 AM
- Between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM
- After 9:30 PM
✅ 4. Mobile Number Linked Account Info Limit
You can check if your mobile number is linked to a bank account only 25 times a day.
Why Are These Rules Being Introduced?
Every month, India records 16 billion UPI transactions, which puts a heavy load on the servers. In April and May, several users reported UPI outages due to server overload. NPCI found that most issues happened because users were checking their account balance repeatedly or refreshing failed transactions multiple times.
These new rules will reduce unnecessary server calls, making the system faster, smoother, and more reliable.
Impact on UPI Users
- You need to plan your balance checks carefully within the daily limit.
- Avoid refreshing stuck payments repeatedly.
- Subscription payments may process only during non-peak hours, so schedule accordingly.
Final Words
These new UPI rules from 1st August 2025 are designed to improve transaction speed and security. So, if you use PhonePe, Google Pay, or Paytm, make sure you follow these guidelines to avoid any issues.
